Bærmand

In the novel, the term was used to describe men, often of a heavier build, who would venture into the woods under the pretense of berry picking but were believed to be engaging in homosexual activities. The slur combines the connotations of both deception and a contemptuous view of their physical appearance and sexual orientation.

Notably, Herman Bang was a gay man himself, which adds a layer of irony and complexity to the term's origin. The term reflects societal prejudices and the stigmatization of homosexuality during that period.
