Rednecks are simple country folk, generally applied to those in the southern United States but lately applied farther afield. The term Redneck comes from the tell tale sun spot on the back of their neck.
Rednecks tend to be self reliant, poor, and uneducated. Generally uneducated and self reliant is because of their state of poverty. Back in the day education wasn't public, cheap, and most cases available. because they lacked knowledge, and knew it, they depended upon more educated folk for whatever was out of their scope. Hence their tendancy toward racism.
Rednecks tendency to distrust Yankees is because most feds are Yankee, and Feds are always in their business. The origin of their tendency or Moonshine and Nascar goes hand and hand with their distaste for the Feds.

If you have to take your transmission out of the tub so your wife can take a bath you might be a redneck.
