Alternate name for a submarine’s fathometer, the device that tells how far down the bottom of the ocean is.

I was doing OK, but when the quartermaster called out a red sounding after checking the fat ho meter, I myself had a brown sounding.

Also said when describing plans that will result in the act of copulation at the expense of getting an F.
