Mitchell had a momen't when crashing into a tree after dodging what seemed to be a deer, but he was focused on a memory of playing deer hunter, and the car hit a dip in the road causing the headlights to make a sudden shift in how the shadow hits the pavement which further tricked his brain into seeing a deer. Thus creating the momen't of seeing a deer.
