banter

Highly irritating word used by "people of a certain class" to describe the act of talking to someone who isn't a complete moron and can reciprocate said act. The word is one of about fifteen or so (for instance, "physically", "actually" and "grim") that are used excessively in conversations that do not call for their presence. To use the word "banter" to describe talking to someone, or, worse still, to use it proactively (see below) is a crime of speech and should garnish you a mother-fucker of a kick arse from all those around you who recognise you for the nob you are.

Descriptively: "Yeah, we had a great time last night - sank a few pints and had a bit o' banter..."

Proactively: "Let's go out tonight, sink a few pints and have a bit o' banter!" (note the elevated excitement in the proactive usage, indicated by the exclamation mark)

Canter banter

The act of engaging in verbal competition with another whilst in the vicinity of the city of Canterbury, South East England. Such communication may include insulting the other, or the other's family or friends. When occuring amongst the student population (i.e. those attending Canterbury Christ Church of the University of Kent), it may be used to indicate the unimpressive drinking capability of a certain individual.

Example of Canter banter:
C4 student: "Dude, you can't drink for shit."
University of Kent student: "Oh yeah? Watch me down this jug of Snake Bite... not so big now are ya!"
C4 student: "That's not what your mum said."

banter

An exclamation intended to commemorate the occurence of a witty, jovially insulting, hilarously harsh or awkward comment, as well as lubricating the passage of conversation so as to facilitate further banter in the near future. It is most effectively used as a stand-alone catchphrase or vocal tool to break the awkward silence, indicate your approval of the previous comment or assert your position as the alpha banterer, or, in rarer circumstances, an effective "banter beacon", defined as one able to signal the presence of banter within moments of it appearing. Has been known to be used as a noun in the previously described ways but is certainly better employed as a single exclamation, leaving explanation of its context to those immediately adjacent to the utterer of the word. Has known to be used in conjunction with "Lad!" throughout history.

girl: "why do you keep throwing stones at me?"
boy: "probably because i don't ever wanna have sex with you"
banter beacon: "BAAAANTER!!!!"

mandem: "shu-hutt your mouth or im gonna stab you blud"

A person who smothers fun.

Likened to a fire blanket due to its ability to extinguish fun by asphyxiating it at an early stage.
