Protender

The act of one pretending or proclaiming to be a pro athlete when in reality they are not. Particularly common in the sport of triathlon.

Protenders are fond of applying for as much sponsorship as possible. They are proud to wear more logos than a NASCAR and claim to have "signed" with these sponsors. Yet, in reality, their sponsorship is little more than a cost discount.

Sadly there are several instances of protenders bending the truth or blatantly lying to potential sponsors in order to land a sponsorship, thus stealing said sponsorship from deserving real pros.

Protenders are almost always slow, non-competitve and little more than pack fodder.

"Did you see the new Team Timex roster? What a bunch of protenders".

Proteus

Shepherd of the deep.

In Greek mythology, Proteus is an early sea-god, one of several deities whom Homer calls the "Old Man of the Sea," whose name suggests the "first" as protogonos is the "primordial" or the "firstborn.” He became the son of Poseidon in the Olympian theogony (Odyssey iv. 432), or of Nereus and Doris, or of Oceanus and a Naiad, and was made the herdsman of Poseidon's seals, the great bull seal at the center of the harem. He can foretell the future, but, in a mytheme familiar from several cultures, will change his shape to avoid having to; he will answer only to someone who is capable of capturing him.
