Such photos are often created through the use of models in staged scenarios, and may be used in graphic/web design situations where hiring a photographer to capture real life events is cost-prohibitive or impossible. The convenience of stock photos make them popular among the designers of Republican campaign websites for whom images of non-white supporters may be elusive or nonexistent.

Efforts by the RNC to woo Latino voters were hindered when somebody noticed its use of a stock photo of Asian children on its Latino outreach website.

retroactively-awkward photo op

The tendency of girls to take pictures with everyone at a party (regardless of whether or not they like the people in the photos), so that if something awkward or embarrassing happens with someone during the course of that party, there is usually a photo of them before that incident happened.
