Virginia Beach has nearly 1/2 million people residing here permanently, and most probably another 100K during the peak tourist season.
In 2010, it was rated the safest city in the US for a city of it's size (400-600K pop) by the FBI.
It is in the Bible belt, so there are churches on almost every corner, and the atmosphere here supports this. If you grew up in say New Jersey, you'd have to not use the F-bomb as much or else you'd have citizens looking at you like you were from another planet.
It is 90% suburban and 10% metropolitan with the new TownCenter offering the city a true 'downtown'. It's Oceanfront if very developed as well with tall hotels and many amenities including stages for outdoor concerts on the boardwalk, and often times, small amusement rides set up in one location or another.
It is finally catching up with Norfolk in offering cultural and art events meeting the needs of it's growing DC/NY/NJ transplant professionals.
It is also working towards having light rail, adding to the line that Norfolk is opening for service over the next 6 months.

Get the Virginia Beachmug. The largest city in Virginia. With 90% suburbs and 10% beach resort. Theres mainly millions shopping centers and small up scale downtown. The city is known in the "youth" mind as hard, or hood, or gangs run the city.....no. The kids 21ish under to 12 grow up watching bet and real ghetto and see Norfolk, and then add there own drama by acting a fool. Some people have problems but most kids just follow what the real hood does to look cool, but they live in the suburbs. Mostly White. Along with that Many skaters and white boys acting black. Along with many asians due to navy area. For the most part Quiet city, not much going down, kinda lame place, it has country and farm land like 10 mins aways from downtown. some city.

Get the Virginia Beachmug. Virginia Beach is a very populated city, but we can't forget about the outskirts of town. If you are traveling to Va beach you might want to bring your passport if you are interested in exploring pungo... its a whole new country out there. Be careful you might encounter a lot of ignorance because in the past, Virginia Beach has been ranked the 3rd most conservative city in the NATION. yes the entire NATION. If you go to the beach head towards the northend, that's where you can find the locals. Don't be surprised if every girl looks the same, that's just how it works. BUT be careful CURFEW is 11:00 PM. Lastly, if you go there to go swimming in the ocean then get ready for some brown, dirt, ugly ass non-waves. Hey but at least Virginia Beach is a little relevant... if we exclude pungo.
