Lost In Translation

1)When something is translated into another language, and sometimes translated back into the original language, and because of differences of the languages some of the original meaning is lost.

2)Whenever someone re-does something in a new medium (for instance, a movie based on a book) and, due to differances between the mediums, some details and the original meaning is not present.

3)A movie that came out in 2003.
1)See larstait's post for a good example.

2)"Did you like the new Harry Potter movie?" asked Maria. "No," answered Sharon. "They couldn't include all the details that were in the book because then the movie would be too long. A lot of the characterization and subext was lost in translation."

3)I really liked Lost in Translation. And if you didn't, your opinion can't possibly be worth anything, you must be an idiot or a philistine. No, I didn't just imagine the subtext, it's there and it's very moving!

TranslateGate

A mysterious glitch on Google Translate, whereupon you set the "translate from" language to Somali, and type in 2-3 character sets of words. The resulting text seems to be pulled from sites like Disqus, StumbleUpon, dating sites, and other random websites, and isn't always in English, even if you set the "translate to" language to English. For example, sometimes it will come out in Thai or Japanese. Other times, it will sound like you're conversing with an AI bot, though this has been disputed.
Have you seen the TranslateGate mystery? I typed in "ick ick ick ick ick," and the translation came from a Thai dating site. WTF?

translave

to translate e.g. documents in large numbers for someone who clearly overuses his/her authority and position in the company by giving you things he/she could translate by himself/herself
Anita: Busy? What are you doing?
Tony: I've just learnt that my job is also to translate or I should say: translave. So I'm translaving this moron's presentation. It is so basic that he could do it by himself, but of course - he has his people to do it. I hate the fact that I can speak Spanish.
