West Berlin

A capitalist island located in the middle of Communist East Germany during the Cold War that is filthy and dirty as shit with cheap apartments in the city along with the city being filled by French, American and British guys occupying Berlin since the end of WW2 and most of them got drunk and vomit on the filthy streets of West Berlin.

Male: Yooo I'm gonna move to West Berlin
Female:YOOOOOOOO isnt that place dirty and filthy being filled by British American and French guys who never wanna leave since the end of WW2

East Berlin

An even filthier and shittier part of Berlin during the Cold War packed with Soviet Soldiers who like the French British and American on the Western side, think that the party after WW2 is not yet over so they stayed with the destroyed building from the battle being replaced by mostly shitty ass looking pre fab concrete commie blocks found across the shitty Eastern Bloc.

Male: Honey, once we move to West Berlin, we're gonna shop our groceries in the East.
Female: EWWWWWWWWWW thats even shittier and filthier than West Berlin packed with Russian guys who like the American British and French thought the post battle party never ended and the city is gross with many shitty pre fab concrete commie blocks everywhere
Male: I know thats why I love you so much and we're gonna have a wedding in the S-Bahn station in East Berlin with me inviting Soviet, American, British and French Soldiers, Officers and Generals

The Berlin Funnel

A metaphorical process that many privileged expats - often from countries like Australia or France- who move to Berlin for the vibes. It describes the predictable trajectory of initial excitement and exploration, often characterized by partying and casual drug use, which escalates over time. Many find themselves burned out after a couple of years, losing their sense of purpose, and ultimately leaving Berlin more confused than when they arrived.

They treat the city as a disposable playground, diving into its nightlife and drug culture with little regard for its actual residents or community. Many of these expats identify as leftists and engage in performative activism but fail to acknowledge their role in contributing to gentrification and other systemic issues.

They’re totally in the Berlin Funnel—moved here for the vibes, started partying every weekend, and now they don’t even remember why they came.
