A milky white latex excreted by several species of wild lettuce, namely _Lactuca virosa,_ known as "lettuce opium" on account of its sedative and analgesic properties. As a latex, it greatly resembles opium, both in that it emerges a white fluid and gradually becomes a thick, solid resin.
