Holding ones arm outstretched with thumb and fingers retracted except the middle one and the middle finger extended as far as possible, You are now Flying the Fickle finger of fate. When you aim it at someone in particular, you are giving them a "Flying Fickle Finger of Fate Award"

If something is bad, then it can described as "a fate worse than tummyache". For example, being kicked in the nuts by a miss rosie, or being forced to talk to kim
Kim: Why do you want me to unblock you?
Lar: I don't. Then you could talk to me, and that would be a fate worse than tummyache!

Something you really want and think you are going to get and then it doesn't happen for you. The genesis of the term was an actual grab of an ass that went bad.
"I thought I had that job promotion in the bag, but it turned out to be just another ill-fated ass grab."
