rhode island school of design

One of the top, if not the top, art schools in the USA. Other art schools / art students are always trying to put it down (despite its incredibly long list of notable alumni and high rankings) by calling it overrated (some people say Yale is overrated too, whatever). Popularly known as "RISD" (Riz-dee). Notable alumni include Seth Macfarlane and Kara Walker. The school has an acceptance rate of 35% as of 2010 according to the college board. Risd has been graced by the presence of numerous famous/important people, like Yo-Yo Ma. RISD students have had the opportunity to work with engineers and designers from NASA. The school has awesome facilities and a career services department that pretty much rivals that of most other art schools in the states.

People often comment on how weird RISD students dress. Many RISD kids are seen as (and admittedly, really are) hipsters.

Landfill Island

A derogatory or disparaging term for the area inside the big box store "Target" where guests (customers) frequent. White trash "guests" often return items for the most puzzling and bizarre reasons.

"Landfill Island" was out of control today. There was a disorderly and unruly overflow of garbage piling up around customer service.

-"I bought a coffee maker last week. Damn thing didn't work, no matter how much gasoline I put in it. Its broke!"

long island

mostly suburban area. bedroom communities. life centers around your car and it's functioning properly. culturally distinct from NYC and upstate in various ways. usually if someone was born and raised on long island, they say "Long Island" as opposed to "New York" when someone asks them where they are from. can be extremely boring. real real boring. big box retail and malls, like everywhere else in the united states. once you get past riverhead, it's all very very rural and sparsely populated. The Hamptons are like colonies of sorts ruled over by foreigners. not really considered part of Long Island proper by people who live there, but many people like to go there and look at things, celebrity watch, go to the beaches etc. there are many, many, many nice beaches. everywhere. did I mention cars? cars are everything. a very big part of the culture. I'm sure the population's median income mirrors much of the rest of the country. one of the largest problems Long Island is experiencing is retaining it's young people. a lot of young people can't afford to live there because of the zoning codes and limited amount of affordable housing and apartments, so they end up having to move to the city or somewhere else, or they continue to live with their parents well into their twenties and then move somewhere else.
