Nigger-rigged

Something improperly fixed, often mechanical or electronic. It is a derogatory term derived from "jerry-rigged" which came into use from the confusion of "jury-rigged," a nautical term for a makeshift replacement of rig that has been damaged or lost overboard, and "Gerry-built," which referred to the low quality of German manufactures in the latter part of the 19th century. Also known euphemistically as "Afro-Engineering" or "Colored Engineering"

nigger rig it

to temporarily "fix" something using whatever materials are at hand. Perfectly acceptable in an emergency, but not as a general rule.

My bike chain broke when I was ten miles from the house.

My buddy's muffler kept falling off, so we nigger-rigged it to the chassis with a wire hanger.

nigger rig

A term used to describe a temporary fix or quick fix for an object using any tools at hand. Derived from the ingenuity of early African-Americans who did not have the means to fix every day objects and had to come up with these temporary fixes.

"My antenna broke on my TV so I nigger rigged a coat hangar so I could watch my show."

Poor-quality, inferior craftsmanship or construction work that reflects slovenliness, inattention to detail, incompetence and poor training. Taking shortcuts that result in shoddy, unattractive buildings, furniture, facilities, etc., and may also jeopardize health and safety due to failure to observe codes and norms.

"Look at all this nigger-rigging. They hung the doors upside down, for God's sake!"

"It's just nigger-rigging if you don't measure at least twice."
