Shielding a person from the consequences of a destructive behavior; Allowing a person's destructive behavior to persist by managing or minimizing the ill-effects of the behavior.

"Enabling" vs. "Empowering"

Enabling: supporting a person's behavior that (repeatedly/habitually) instigates a negative or destructive result

Empowering: supporting a person's ability or effort in a positive or progressive endeavor

Enabling can be as destructive as the behavior itself . . . a person enabling a destructive behavior is motivated by their need to do so and is gratified by reinforcing their superiority or control over that person; An "enabler" holds a person in an inferior state by denying them the motivation to change and therefore, the opportunity to grow.

douche enabler

Someone who condones, tolerates or encourages douche behavior. Said douche may have other good qualities that cause their enablers to overlook their douchebaggery.

However, this can sometimes lead to the enablers being seen as douches-by-association, and in extreme cases, a douche involved in positive activity can cause such efforts and projects to be seen in a negative, douchey light.

Douche enabler: "Why don't you take it easy on Duke? He's a big sweet Teddy bear!"

Me: "Why do you even wanna be associated with an abusive douchebag? He oughta be ostracized, at least then he wouldn't send new people we meet running for the fucking hills."

Vegas Enabler

Those friends who are unpredictable, uncontrollable, and yet, so damn irresistible. Whenever they're around, you know something is going to happen. Usually something insane. Definitely something memorable. These people talk us out of our comfort zones, crossing the line, and pulling us along with them. Kicking and screaming at first, laughing later. Some call them bad influences, but Vegas calls them unofficial ambassadors. Because, quite frankly, what happens here wouldn’t happen without them.
