alot

The CORRECT form of the term meaning "a large amount" of something. "A lot" (as 2 words) means "a large empty piece of land" as in "a lot for used cars."
"I have alot of friends" means "I have a large number of friends," whereas "I have a lot of friends" means that your buddies are outside standing around in a big empty piece of land, looking like idiots!

alot

It's cyber-speak to indicate a huge quantity of something. For the prudish Queen's English users, it's equivalent to "a lot".

Alot

A wrong and alternative way of writing the word a lot.

Often called a fake word since it does not show up in the dictionary.
If you use write 'a lot' 'alot' then you probably didn't pay attention in your 3rd grade English class.

Alot

A world that is used primarily on internet site.
It cannot be found in the dictionary and drives many people crazy as it is incorrect.

Allot means to share/ divide space or things- this is where allotment came from, an allotted space of land.

lot- meaning one of a set of objects/ a way of deciding (similar to vote) or the decision or choice made by such a method.

a lot- Very many, a large number; also, very much.

Now, the word 'alot' doesn't appear in any correct dictionary, so it is not a word. It is a popular misspelling- done by those who seem to have missed basic spelling classes in Primary school.
Idiot- OMG I luv him alot

Person with correct spelling- a lot, you LOVE him a lot.

Alot

The Alot is an imaginary creature used as a coping mechanism used by lovers of proper grammar. Instead of becoming angry at the incorrect use of 'a lot' found throughout the internet, the Alot allows the grammar-lover to imagine a sentence that actually makes grammatical sense.

The Alot looks like a cross between a bear, yak and a pug dog, and was created by the author of Hyperbole and a Half. Original description (with pictures) can be found there.
"I am sad, Alot." (I am sad a lot.)

"I care about this Alot." (I care about this a lot.)
