longboard

A skateboard that is typically longer than a freestyle board. There are 4 main types of longboarding and boards are designed with each type of longboarding in mind:

1. Speedboarding - The goal here is speed, so boards are designed with stability in mind. They tend to have a rigid deck which is lowered significantly. They have large wheels and large trucks as well.

2. Cruising - The goal here is a smooth easy ride. These longboards are designed to be responsive and stable at low speeds. The decks usually have quite a bit of flex in them and are still long like a speedboard. They tend to have slightly harder wheels than a speedboard but still relatively the same size. They are very smooth and easy to ride because they bend as you carve, sticking you to your board as you corner quickly.

3. Sliding - These boards are designed for sliding. They are usually fairly short and have kicktails on the front and the back. They have small hard wheels that slide very easily.

4. Carving - These boards are designed to carve really tight and fast. They have a shorter wheelbase than a cruiser and turn a lot faster too. They have wide soft wheels for maximum traction. People usually use these boards in slalmom races.

Many boards are also designed with 2 or more longboarding styles in mind. It is even becoming quite popular in many areas as it is a great mode of transportation.
Boarder Dude 1 - Dude! I hit 93km/h on my longboard the other day!

Boarder Dude 2 - Gnarly! I'm not a speed guy though. I like to just carve it up and ride nice long smooth hills. I also like to slide.

Boarder Dude 1 - Sweet man! I have a wicked sliding setup myself. I'm just learning to do 360's.

Boarder Dude 2 - Nice. I've got the 360's down to a science. Let's go tear up a hill right now.

Boarder Dude 1 - Totally!

Boarder Dude 2 - I love longboarding.

Boarder Dude 1 - I also love longboarding.

Longboarding

Similar to skateboarding but the board is longer and there are different types. Some people just like to cruise around while others prefer downhilling, longboard dance, and freestyle.
I like longboarding better than skateboarding because I like the flow of the dance steps.

Longboard

A longer version of a skateboard, but with the same culture. NOT faster than a bike
Zac: Longboards are as fast as bikes
Matt: No they aren't
Zac: I'll show you
Ground: Don't worry, I'll catch you Zac!
(Zac falls and breaks ribs)
Matt: Told you

Longboarding

The fastest expanding form of skateboarding. Contrary to popular belief, the sport is greatly expansive beyond bros in board shorts (sadly, these are the most vocal assholes who own longboards, but are not necessarily longboarders). Disciplines include downhilling (trying to go as fast as possible, serious practitioners will wear leathers and full face helmets), freeriding (essentially doing slides and tricks combined with anything downhill, mostly done for fun), and freestyle (emulating shortboard tricks on larger decks). As the downhill riding community is starting to go mainstream, a proper comparison to regular short boards would be that of downhill/freestyle mtb to bmx; while both may have the same forms and ideas supporting them, their applications are greatly different and require skills respective to each, and thusly the similarities in said forms are not necessarily applicable to the ways they are used. Basically, regarding all the hate those who enjoy riding street/ park on a shortboard: don't worry about how other people are having fun and just enjoy what you do (I will say, if you wear flip flops while "skating" or ride a pintail cruiser, please; just stop).
Longboarder: Today I had a great longboarding sesh: started off railing a toeside corner going 40, then got my freeride deck out and got a 30ft standie, and finished off the day cruising around learning some big spins and old school kickflips for poops and giggles.

Skater: You do any park or street shit?

Longboarder: No, taking a longboard into a skatepark is ridiculous and annoying, though I sometimes ride bowls with my shortboard.

longboarder

Person who normally rides a longboard skateboard rather than a more traditional short skateboard. While most (not all) skateboarders tend to have a tendency to attempt to be cool by rebelling against society by listening to music with no flow to it and by hating everyone around them; Longboarders are generally more chilled out; Opting for more peaceful genres of music like Ska and also just skate to enjoy the ride, not to act like cocky jerks to everybody.
Skater - Man... People all suck. I hate my parents who pretty much payed for this board.

Longboarder - That's too bad bra. I'm just trying to enjoy life as it comes dude

Skater - Well you're a pussy too!

Longboarder - Damn...

*Karma.. Skateboarder crashes in freak accident after failing a trick and ends up on Scarred. There's his 15 minutes of fame*

Longboarding

Longboarding is a way of life. When you longboard the earth stops spinning. Many people refer to it as a sport, but its life.

longboard

Any surfboard that is more than 3' longer than the rider is defined as a Lonboard by the Hawaians.

HOWEVER - it is more the state of mind.

Longboarding is about the soul, expression and The Glide. Where shortboarders beat each other for the waves and perform aggresive moves to carve up the water, you will almost certainly find a longboarder behind them, contemplating their surroundings, taking in the view and with a huge grin on their face.
Add another longboarder and you have a friend with a common goal; glide, float, dance and shimy on the board using your board and your body together - swap stories of shortboarders scattering in your wake and the time you soul arched hanging ten for 20 seconds at Jeffries..
Longboarding is the original soul of original surf culture.
Man I was out the other day on my 10'4" longboard and the waves were 2' and clean - best waves I ever had - shortboarders couldn't catch 'em - have you ever seen a Longboader whinge that there is no surf?
