To transfer (data or programs) from a server or host computer to one's own computer or device without cost. It's slang because there is no space between the two words, making it one hip, easy to use word.

Sara was really glad that she could get the new Wes Anderson short as a freedownload.

Much like a man with out underwear may freeball a woman may choose to go braless and be freeboobing.
