Domplot

/ˈdɒm.plɒt/ (DOM-plot)

A plot in a narrative (such as a TV series, novel, or similar work) that was clearly intended to be a subplot (or B-story) but which grows in scope, importance or screen time until it overshadows or even replaces the originally intended main plotline (the A-story).

When what was intended as a subordinate plot ends up being more of a dominant plot, this domplot may take over the story's central conflict, character focus and thematic weight.
"The writer focused so much on the romantic storyline, instead of the survival story, that it ended up being a domplot instead of a subplot!"
"The initial monster-of-the-week format was abandoned when the serialized conspiracy theory storyline became the domplot of the entire series."
