While this concept has been recognized throughout history (think Aristotle’s “there is no great genius without a touch of madness”), no specific word existed to describe this precise phenomenon until now.
Originally coined in Dutch as “fnoknostisch” by a 17-year-old student in 2003. The word combines the nonsensical “fnok” (representing the chaotic/mad element) with the suffix “-nostic” (relating to knowledge), creating a term for that uncertain territory between brilliance and madness.
