Oersted made this discovery while he was attempting to show friends, family, and students how he could heat a wire with an electrical current. While conducting this experiment, he also had a compass nearby. Each time Oersted completed the circuit for his demonstration, he noticed that the needle of the compass moved. You may know that a compass works because it has a magnet in it to make it always point north. When Oersted connected his wire to a battery, the magnetized needle in the compass felt the magnetic force of the circuit. Oersted had discovered that a magnetic field was produced by electricity moving through a wire.
