An american saying about communism. As they used to think that communism was taking over the world. the saying basically means the americans would rather die than be communists, the red bit comes from the belief that red is a communist colour! this phrase was also used with the J F Kennedy murder.

A phrase learned growing up in wisconsin. Not sure of its use outside of that illustrious state. Means that something is not so great, but it could be worse.

So you're going to visit Topeka. It's better than a stick in the eye.

better than expected

better than expected: it's the new way out of something.

The economy after the 2008 crash seems to be recovering at fast pace at the incessant sound of "better than expected". the only problem is that the predictions of what's "expected" are made by the same guys that didn't see the worse coming... when it was really better.

dude1: Hey dude? Is your wife really cheating on you and you still in this good mood?

dude2: Well.. it's because I thought she was double timing me with 3 different guys. Turned out to be only with two of them.
