name-killer

A name-killer is a very strong association of a name with an unfortunate or disreputable person or character, with the consequence of the name becoming less popular than before.
Adolf, Elmer, and Cletus are all examples of once more common names that were affected by name-killer associations. It is still open whether Monica will suffer this same effect.

Name Drain

When a person continuously name-drops somebody who they admire, more often than not a person who isn't famous, merely a nobody who has gained cult status in one person's eyes.
1: "Yeah, I have a friend called Tom. He's quite awesome."
2: "Okay."
1: "He once drank, like, 16 beers in one night"
2: "Sweet. You been on YouTube lately?"
1: "Yeah! Tom has an account on there, he's got loads of dope material"
2: "Right... you want to go play football?"
1: "Yeah. Let me call Tom, see if he wants to come"
2: "I was thinking just a quick game"
1: "Dude! Tom loves quick games!"
2: "AHHH! Name Drain! Why don't you just go and suck Tom off?"

name dropping

The act of inserting the name of any obscure cultural institution into a conversation in an effort to accelerate the building of rapport with someone, or to make one's self appear to be more important. Typically considered by intelligent people to be a negative habit.
Here is an example of name dropping in context.
"I totally saw this guy I used to work with at the Bright Eyes show last tuesday!"

With the intended response being:
"woah, you listen to Bright Eyes!?"

One more example

"I was getting off the train and my Don Delillo book fell right out of my bag and onto the tracks!!!"
