They may include (but not limited to) hiring dj for music, photographer for pictures, decorating with banners and balloons, offering free food and tshirts for the guests. Some people think they are ghetto and an unnecessary expensive, while others have adopted it as a rites of passage, comparable to a quinceanera or a cotillion.

Robin could not go to her dance recital because her mother was throwing her older brother a prom send off that same night.

a drink a guy gives to his date at the prom, mixed with a rufie or another incapacitating goody, in order to get up that expensive dress. Called so because it is usually a punch-like drink and it packs a serious "punch."
