blastbeat

A type of fast drum beat characteristic of extreme heavy metal styles such as black metal, death metal and grindcore. Blastbeat is comprised at minimum of the bass drum and the snare drum, altough normally these two are accompanied by a cymbal such as hi-hat, ride, splash or crash.

Blastbeat originated in the '80s by hardcore and proto-grindcore bands which were seeking ways to bring the speed and harshness of their music to a new level. Popularized by grindcore bands such as Napalm Death and Carcass, the blastbeat eventually became an essential, if not the most important and distinctive feature of extreme music.

The blastbeat is normally consisted of a double bass roll of 32nd notes, on top of which the drummer hits the snare rapidly on every downstroke (every other hit). The drummer usually also hits the cymbal the same time as the snare drum. This results in a very aggressive and fast drum beat, as the tempos in which the blastbeat is played usually range from 200 bpm upwards.

The blastbeat is a cornerstone in modern extreme music, as its brutality provides an apt setting for the grim and gruesome soundscapes of death and black metal.

bastard smile

A bastard smile is an expression used by people when they have succeeded in annoying you or making you lose your temper. These bastards find it fun to be a nuisance to you and can’t wait for you to react, and when you do they will laugh or pull a bastard smile. The bastard smile can also be used to further irritate people, especially when they are powerless to act, for example, some kids are playing football and a group of adults come along pick up the ball then hold it over their heads and pull a bastard smile.

Compassionate Bastard

A person who follows the social and political philosophy of Compassionate Bastardism.

A Compassionate Bastard wants to live in a world where it is not necessary to be confronted by beggars or demands for handouts from charities. Governments are responsible for proving for their citizens and in a Compassionate Bastard system you could be as big a bastard as you liked, focussing on your own well-being and lifestyle reassured that everyone’s basic needs would be taken care of, yet not feel that you are being taken advantage of with over-taxation or rewarding of the lazy.

Bastard Squad

A fictional television show that is referenced in the 1980s sitcom "The Young Ones." One of the main characters, Vivian (played by Adrian Edmundson) is a punk rocker who is a devoted fan of the show.
