people volunteer at church, school or community for many reasons: mostly because they want to help and be involved, but there are other reasons, too.
In some areas, like school and church, there's a significant social pressure to volunteer, it's frowned upon not to do it. So some people do it for that reason - just to keep or gain a good reputation. Some schools require their student's parents to volunteer a certain amount of hours or to pay additional tuition.

Other people volunteer to meet new people, like after relocating from another city.
People volunteer, because they feel the obligation to do it, or the passion.
Others again volunteer to fill a void in their lifes.
There are many reasons to volunteer, and many ways to do so.

People here look strange at you, if you don't volunteer in some way.

Volunteering is fun. You can help others and meet new interesting people at the same time.

I'm divorced and my children are grown up and live on the other side of the country. So I volunteer to have something to do.

Dim Sum Volume

The volume and loudness level of the surrounding environment in a public setting such as a restaurant. Usually result in irritation after a prolonged attempt to engage in any conversation over a very loud environment.

At the Dim Sum restaurant, it is so crowded and loud in there one cannot hear what their own table is trying to say when engaged in a conversation.

"What did you say? I can't hear you, it's like DIM SUM Volume up in this place"

"it's too quiet here, feels like everyone is eavesdropping into our conversation, let's go somewhere with Dim Sum volume"

Volunteer wife

A wife that marries a person for a desired marriage that allows her to volunteer her time whenever she feels like it because she does not have any other financial or domestic responsibilities to provide for the marriage relationship or raise young children. If young children are in this relationship it would be expected that there would be paid caregivers to raise the children so that volunteer wife would have free time to volunteer for any services, functions, or charities she chooses. Volunteer wives seek admiration, status, and power among those organizations they volunteer.

Volunteer Editors

Volunteer Editors are the people who will reject all your Urban Dictionary words for no reason. It enrages people especially when they put a lot of work into there word. They do not understand that some words are not easy to make definitions for but they allow dumb posts that have no proper grammar or have any meaning.
