Alt-media is better than mainstream social media, but it still has the problem of centralization. The "fediverse" refers to all federated (read, free) services and protocols, from video sharing with Peertube to "FOSS Discord", the Matrix Protocol.
It is infested with lefties, which is ironic for a group that would shut down all federated services by force in their own society for enabling "fascism". However, since these services are truly free and federated, you can always start your own instance comprised entirely of your own friends or those approved by yourself.
The Fediverse, just like everything else in existence, is under attack by politicians (read, subhumans, criminals) via threats to e2ee and p2p protocols, which are the very foundations of some of these services.
