It has thru time evolved from "retard" into "tard". the reason for this transition is due to the mainstream media completely alienating the word "retard", the reason for the alieanation is the evoloution of the word, as the meaning is a mentally handicapped person which over time grew to stupid, the word was unliked by the mentally handicapped because of its mainstream use as a insult. due to this it has gained an offensive meaning to it, even though it didnt start that way. "tard" tried to capture the same feeling as the original when used as a insult.
