Sometimes spelled "poseur," a poser is someone who attempts to assimilate themselves into a particular group with the intent to be accepted, usually on a very superficial level. Often the individual has little knowledge of the group and may adjust their physical appearance, attitude, and philosophies accordingly, and use other tactics to convince members of the group into thinking that they are legitmate. Posers are generally of adolescent age, and usually outgrow this behavior in their adult years. Posers are found in every sub-culture, although they are commonly referenced within the punk, gothic and metal communities. Some bands are seen as "posers" due to their extremely commercial, accessible appeal, giving the impression that they are concerned with popularity and not musical creativity. The term is often incorrectly used to refer to someone who listens to popular music or is otherwise interested in popular social trends; it is not unless this person claims to be part of something while having no real familiarity with it that they should be labeled as such.

Poser: "Yeah, I'm totally into metal..."
Sub-culture tpye: "Really? That's cool. Like who?"
Poser: "Slipknot, Korn, Linkin Park, shit like that."
Sub-culture type: "Do you like any of the classic shit, like Venom, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Exodus, or underground bands like Morbid Angel, Darkthrone, Deicide, Obituary, stuff like that?"
Poser: "Who are they?"

Someone who doesn't appreciate all of the good music from all different genres for it's musicalness and musicality , but instead only likes one genre only and latches onto that one genre in it's entirety , it's look , it's clothing , it's fashion , it's lifestyle , all in a feeble attempt to be seen as cool and to act like a snob and pretend they are better than someone else who's not into their narrow , shallow , narcissistic , superficial , artificial coolness.

punk idiot: I'm like so punk , I act punk , I dress punk , I look so fucking punk , and all I listen to is punk.

metal idiot: I'm like so fucking metal , I act metal , I dress dress metal , I look so metal and badass , and all I listen to is metal.

normal person: You guys are posers.Good music and bad music exists in all genres of music and you need to listen to more than just one genre of music. Besides if all you listen to is just one genre then you must be suffering from the delusion that everything in that one genre constitutes GOOD MUSIC which is impossible since every genre has it's share of good music and bad music regardless of how simple or complex the music is.You guys just don't want to have to think too hard (aw is thinking too hard?) and so you take the easy way out and latch onto one thing hard.Then you adopt the look and the fashion and the hairdo and the lifestyle and "pose" as that image and think that makes you all cool and badass.It doesn't.You're lame.Posers!

Calling someone a poser is:
1) a right of passage for all "emo" kids
2) stupid... no one truely thinks for themselves anyway, even the most "original" probably got it from someone else and/or someone else has already done it
3) equal to myspace, everyone is doing it because everyone else is doing it, and now we are stuck doing it

1) c'mon kid with your hair over one eye, you knew you were in when someone finally called you a poser...
2) "That kid is such a poser" oh wait... was I conforming to everyone else's standards by saying that?

someone who does something to appear cool or fit in, normally into some sort of clique

poser: hmmm i want to be different and unique... how can i do that... i kno i'll turn goth/skater/emo (etc)
next day...
poser is wearing all black/skate brands(eg vans as they are most popular in "fashion")
poser copies what other peopl are wearing and doing, may brag about how depressed they are. also calls themselves what they think they aparantly are and hang out with the people who that think are goth/skater/emo, then stops hanging around with old friends as they are not in the same "clique" they are
months later...
relises that clique is not "in" or cool anymore
example - poser: hmm..."goth" isnt cool anymore...i know i'll go emo!
next day completly changes clothes, puts on a fake personality to fit their new found clique they can copy
may start saying say things like:
'why have you done up your laces, i know no one who ties them up. they just tuck them in their shoe' (they, themselves have just left them dangling out to look "cool". then they fall over and smak their face on the ground haha stupid poser!!!)
if they think theyre skater they may wear converses although theyre the worst shoe to skate in and ive seen little girls who like pink to fat old men with no hair wear them so i have no idea how they became "skater"
Poser: hmmm... skater is cool right now..(dresses all in skate rand clothes etc) yeah! now im skater
but when they actually try skateboarding... they give up after 3 days because they dont like it, but still go around telling people they skateboard so theyll be popular.

One who acts like someone they are not and tries really hard at it, usually to fit in with a specific group. Also, someone who says they are part of a certain group, but really acts alot like they are part of another.

Jordan was like "Yo yo yo im madd rocker yo my favorite song is im so hood! and my ringtone is YAHH TRICK YAHH!" hes such a poser.
