location 419

Location 419 is the geographical space occupied by the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Decree number 419 was the criminal code introduced to deal with Advance-Fee scam.

It is commonly practiced but very rare in Nigeria for anyone to be judicially tried and punished for advance-fee scam.

Hence many Nigerians abroad refer Nigeria to 'Location 419'. The phrase has now been extended to any social misgivings or anomalies that many have experienced in Nigeria. It's also shortened to 'Location 9'.

A phone call from Nigeria requires priority on social media live programmes as the telecommunications may be disrupted, electricity cut-out can make people disappear during video calls, a report of awkward experience of any sort etc may allow the programme to refer the correspondence as being from location 419 or location 9
