linux

A very stable operating system released under the JPL. Originally a spare time project by student Linus Torvalds, Linux has developed into a popular back-end and server operating system. Linux is beginning to make inroads on the desktop.
It is frequently maligned by Windows users because Linux actually requires some degree of intelligence to use.
"That new Linux server is much better than that old WinNT-based pile of crap we used to use!"

What Windoze users should turn to since Windows is clearly crap, evil and bastardised in every way.
Linux runs the web (80% of all servers).
Linux is the base-station of most hackers (see 'Hackers Handbook' by Dr. K, ISBN 1-85868-943-0) because it is inherently secure.
'HOLY SHIT MAN DID YOU SEE THAT?!'
'Yeah dude you fux0red up that poor dudes windoze box'
'Yeah man, linux r0x0rz!!!'
'Yeah'

Linux

The term Linux by itself refers to the kernel, not the operating system. It is based off of UNIX. The popular mobile phone operating system Android runs off of the Linux kernel. Also, OS X is based of of UNIX.
Linux is by far the best operating system for advanced users, though it is mainly up to personal preference

linux

What I use for development of HTML, JAVA, PERL, C, C++. Very stable, but does not have much software that can run on it, because of lack of knowledge about it on the part of the general public. Great for webservers, but until people decide to create software for this system, buggy, backdoored systems like windows will have to do. Linux is often used by professional developers, webmasters, advanced computer users, and people who are able to get off their arse and install it for the sake of their privacy. Some versions (i.e. Red Hat) are relatively easy to install, and can be found free in libraries. Other 'distros' can be found on the internet, but may be harder/easier to install. It can be installed on very low end computers with under a GiG of drive space, and 32k ram. So stable, a Win 9.x. demo cannot crash it =)). Not used often because many people have no idea it exists (that's changing though).

Nerd1: Do you think Linux is better than windows?

Linux

Extremely stable and advanced Operating System. much used by System operators to run on webservers because of it's stability and safety. Very hard to use. Not compatible with Windows programs and therefore not recommended for gamers.
Thank god my servers are much safer and stable now they're penguin powered by Linux

While microsoft and apple were stealing from their rich neighbor, Xeros, linux was at home eating Cracklin' Oat Bran.

Linux is an OS where files have no association to programs; all configuration and settings are stored "wherever" in text files that grow to be megabytes long; most shell commands are so abstractly named that you would never be able to use them without knowing how they work.. or first reading its "manual page".

Linux is an operating system of inconsistancy. Theres over a thousand distributions of linux, and over a billion different modified versions of it. Programs come shipped as source code that you must compile and configure (by way of large scripts that attempt to figure out how your system is running.. since nothing is standard).

Very few consumer hardware companies support linux because there are far too many different scenarios they would have to support.

Linux is great as a server OS, but its when people try to use it as an everyday OS that it turns them into babbling idiots that stop caring about what a program does and start trying to figure out and change how it works.

Since linux was created by people with no aesthetic differentiation... most GUI's you will encounter look like a poor ripoff of windows 3.1.
When I was 8, me and my friend tried to make an operating system in QBASIC that used nothing but text files. I gave up. My friend succeeded and created linux.
