Vanity Identities

Self-Love. A healthy high ego.
It gets mistaken for arrogance.

Bootleg Vanity - if you really like how you look, but you don’t take it seriously and it’s light-hearted. Then your friends know you’re bullshitting them they just do whatever, but they’re cool about it.

High-End Vanity - a healthy selfish. Putting yourself before others to do what's best for you.

Vanity - the mirror thing where you want to kiss yourself and you actually mean it.

It can fluctuate, change and/or evolve over time.
I'm a hybrid Bootleg-High-End Vanity,

Bootleg-leaning Vanity

AKA Bootleg Vanity-leaning Vanity.

vanity boutique

A small, boutique-type store that sells chintzy trinkets and ugly jewelry that you couldn't imagine anyone wanting to buy. These stores are almost always run by middle-aged women with rich husbands who are in need of something to do, so the lack of sales don't force them to close down like other unsuccessful businesses.
"What's Trish up to lately?"
"Since the kids have gone back to school, she opened a little store that sells bedazzled sweaters for dogs and bows she makes by hot gluing dollar-store ribbon to hairclips."
"Sounds like a total vanity boutique."
"It is. She hasn't made a sale yet. But it gives her something to do since her husband is always gone on business trips."

vanity wedding

A destination wedding that is planned to create undue expense, little to do for the guests, short duration, and (foremost) create a “hey, look at me/us” event for the loving but entitled couple.
“OMG, I accompanied my girlfriend to this vanity wedding which cost us a lot of money for a 15 minute glamour photo-op for the bride and groom. They had no concept of the expenses involved for everyone. They should have eloped. We’d all be happier.”

Vanity PhD

A doctoral degree pursued solely for the status conferred by the title of "Dr." and the lifestyle perks associated with living in a desirable location, without any genuine interest in academic achievement or contributing to a field of study. The motivation for obtaining a "vanity PhD" is entirely based on the superficial benefits of holding a doctorate (social prestige and lifestyle) rather than the pursuit of knowledge or a passion for research.
"Did you hear that Catherine got into Columbia University for a PhD in biostatistics? I was surprised considering she wasn't particularly adept at statistics in her undergrad."
"I wouldn't shower her with too much praise, it's nothing but a vanity PhD – she just wants to be known as 'Dr. Caldwell' and explicitly said she didn't want to do her PhD at Penn because 'she couldn't imagine spending her twenties in Philadelphia.'"
"Oh wow, so she's not doing a PhD out of any regard for pursuing the higher truths of academia or for the love of learning. It's all just to fluff up her ego and drink and party in New York City. A vanity PhD if I've ever seen one!"

cyber-vanity

noun or verb

The act of self-declaration via twitter or facebook of what you are currently "doing" (BESIDES typing into facebook or twitter - which is what you are ACTUALLY DOING!) in an attempt to publicly validate your social status and to make it look like you are not a loner or a loser that needs virtual validation to give yourself a sense of self-worth. (As my friend put it, posting that you are doing laundry is not a "status update" - it's a cry for help!)

Dan is totally into cyber-vanity. He updates his facebook status ten times a day. As if we really want to read a play-by-play of his laundry chore.

yuppie vanity show

A TV show or movie designed to cater to yuppies or yuppie wannabes that may still be in elementary school, secondary school or college.

The lead character and their significant other, if around, usually have very successful, professional careers, usually as a doctor, lawyer or important company or government official.

Usually, not always, the lead is depicted as achieved an astronomical amount right at the beginning of their careers. In Damages on FX, Ellen has graduated from law school and has numerous six-figure offers from law firms. She soon takes on a major multi-million dollar class action lawsuit and gets $2 million in bonuses after the case is settled. Most law graduates are lucky to get a paralegal job.

These shows are propaganda for universities who want their students to believe years of school will pay off with lucrative salaries and important careers. Some teens and twenty-somethings will religiously watch these shows under the impression it depicts the career field they are trying to get into.

Most of these shows are the projections of writers who failed to become all these things in life.
Damages, Grey's Anatomy, ER and The Sum of All Fears are examples of yuppie vanity shows.

Dahvie Vanity

One half of the terrible electropop duo "Blood on the Dance Floor." Known as being a creepy pervert, child molester, and all around jerk. He wears terrible makeup, can't sing to save his life, and is worshipped by 12 year old girls with low IQ scores.
Dahvie Vanity took my 12 year old sister onto his tour bus and had sex with her.
