The term originally appeared among players of the Roblox shooter No Big Deal, where it was shouted during intense fights when someone relied purely on instinct and mechanical skill to survive or clutch a fight.

The word “gooner” acts as both an insult and a compliment at the same time. It can mock someone for playing in an overly sweaty or obsessive way, while also acknowledging that their aim is extremely strong.

“How did he hit that? Bro is playing with full gooner aim today.”
