The pendulum is propelled by the pulley and is connected to a special gear called an escapement. The mass and length of the pendulum are calibrated to cause it to swing at a constant interval and the escapement uses that interval to control the movement of the clock at a constant speed. The gears then spin the hands of the clock at the appropriate ratios to show seconds, minutes, and hours accordingly."
