TV Turned Off

The TV (abbreviation for Television) is a metaphor for the persons life. To turn someone’s TV off is to end their life. Or if someone almost got their TV turned off, they almost lost their life. It could be a literal loss of life, or a hyperbolic loss of life.

1.) My mom is going to turn my TV off if I don’t pass this test tomorrow.
2.) I almost got my TV turned off yesterday when that drunk driver almost ran into me. Luckily the police pulled him over in time before anyone got hurt.

Relentlessly nagged someone to the extent they get what they want, but the outcome is worse than they hoped. Shaking a nut tree too vigorously will release good nuts along with nuts that are not ready to harvest. The relationship becomes damaged as the nut tree can also be.

Anna wanted Dave to buy her a new phone. Dave knew that a new model would be coming out soon, but Anna would not wait. She pestered him relentlessly. She “shook him till his nuts fell off”.

Dave bought Anna the new phone, but the phone was not as good as the subsequent version.

The first recorded usage of the viral phrase 'turning off the faucets' was in 2024 by Nevin Shapiro during a Momentum Podcast episode. “I said Coach, if that kid don’t see the field I’m turning off the faucets”, for the purpose of clearly and definitively communicating to Larry Coker, that all funding to the Miami Hurricane football program will immediately come to a halt if he didn’t start then freshman Devin “Hurricane” Hester for subsequent games of the 2003 season. It’s an effective way for one to convey the gravity and seriousness of a situation involving money in a not so subtle yet sophisticated manner.
