Checkmate

Checkmate is a position in Chess, in which a player's king is in a line of attack by an opponent's piece and cannot escape check. Thus, the attacking player wins the game.

Short for temperature check. When somebody who has no intention of following up with a conversation sends a short message, to see if you will reply. Usually used by exes.
