To fart. Academics believe that the expression comes from when you fart so hard and so loudly that you feel like you have just ripped/teared you ass. However, you don't necessarily need to rip your ass to "let it rip".

(verb)

1) To fix a vehicle without taking it to a garage or similar facility.
2) To fix an operating system, usually by re-installing and keeping the settings and applications. Also referred to as a "repair install"

1) My truck was losing power, but I was able to rip it by simply replacing a blown fuse.
2) The latest updates broke several parts of Windows, but a quick rip was able to correct the problem without wiping out the settings.
