baby backdraft

During a tantrum: the dreadful pause that follows a baby's initial scream, as it sucks back more air, to release, an even louder, longer, more ear piercing shriek.

I was just settling into my seat on the plane, when a disgruntled baby nearby let loose with a blood curdling wail. Then came the baby backdraft. It took in a huge gulp of air. I sat helplessly in that half second of calm, waiting for the deafening howl to fill the cabin.

rescission

A for-profit health insurance company's method of rewarding employees for finding ways to drop policyholders who have developed expensive conditions or have pre-existing medical conditions.

Winston had paid four hundred dollars a month for the last eight years - so he could have medical insurance. But because of his carrier's policy of rescission, he was dropped from his plan as soon as got sick.

oscaritis

When a film director directs a film with the intention of winning an Oscar rather than making a good film.

I saw Wolf of Wall Street last weekend, and Martin Scorsese has a case of Oscaritis. The performances are painfully Oscary, and the flashy, unoriginal technique (a rip off of Scorsese's Good Fellas) was like being hit over the head with an Oscar. Definite case of advanced Oscaritis.

A disorder in which one loses the ability to hear what anyone else has to say - because their own self important inner monologue drowns out everything else.

Damon drummed his fingers impatiently while his girlfriend talked about her dying grandmother. He couldn't wait for her to finish, so he could talk about how huge his glutes had become. Because he had Los Angelitis, all he could hear was his own voice.
