Popular UK expression, especially 20 or thirty years ago = when your life or a situation is fast deteriorating or going rapidly downhill

Tubes = probably has its origins in toilet tubes or pipes

We were good at first but our relationship is going down the tubes

Our season has gone totally down the tubes and looks like we'll be relegated

taking the piss

It's now often used when people take liberties and don't care about the consequences, for instance someone living in a nice house and trashing it or ridings roughshod over neighbours, knowing he won't get evicted by the authorities.

Now he's taking the piss. He had his music cranked up again last night and parks in our parking space.
