A place that white people are afraid to go to. To them it is the epitome of the ghetto. Many people from other parts of the Bronx are even afraid to go to the South Bronx.
Though once being made up of vibrant neighborhoods such as Mott Haven, Hunts Point, Melrose, Morrisania and Highbridge, now it's just culturally deteriorated to the "South Bronx".

I would know because I grew up in Westchester and just transferred into Manhattan College, in Riverdale. It's in fact very much the Bronx in my opinion. Riverdale is nothing like where I grew up, which isn't even that far into Westchester County (Eastchester to be exact.)
Though Riverdale may not be a hardcore ghetto, it's not the only kinda nice neighborhood in the borough; last time I checked I wasn't looking over my shoulder in Woodlawn or Throgs Neck.

Get the Riverdale mug.That's not actually correct, JB. (I do love your upstate-bashing, though!) Originally Marble Hill was attached to Manhattan, but a canal was dug in the Harlem River which separated it from Manhattan and put it on the mainland. Though it has always been part of New York County, it is generally regarded as the Bronx. It looks like the Bronx, it feels like the Bronx, the address says Bronx, NY 10463, and the area code is 718.
When you're walking down Broadway, Kingsbridge (Bronx) becomes Marble Hill (Manhattan) after W 230th St, but there is no "Welcome to Manhattan" sign.

While that may not be entirely accurate, Rockland county is an outer-suburban wasteland, not even on par with Westchester in terms of wealth and urbanization (as sad as that sounds.) However, it does have some Sopranos fame; Ralph Cifaretto's head was buried in Sloatsburg and Adriana was whacked by Silvio in a forest in Ramapo.

Get the rockland mug.A mountainous version of the Midwest. Country life at its worst. Upstate is very distinctive looking from other similar areas (Western Pennsylvania, the Midwest, New England) and it all looks exactly the same.
Two places upstate 50 miles apart look more like each other than two places in Yonkers two BLOCKS apart.
