test drive

Trying something that you've recently bought for the first time, e.g. "test driving" a pack of caffeine pills bearing the brand "Tombocantuxin" to keep you awake whilst staying up late doing mountaining college assignments
I just got a pack of Tombocantuxin caffeine pills, so I'm going to take them for a test drive tonight while I finish my college assignments and see if they really help me stay awake!

tombo ngantuk

Originally referring to caffeinated products like black coffee or caffeine pills, this phrase originating from the Javanese for "the medication to relieve sleepiness" now means the act of Googling for the images of women's underwear to cure sleepiness whilst you stay up late doing college assignments on your laptop.
After hours of staring at my laptop trying to finish my paper, I resorted to some "tombo ngantuk" by Googling images of women's underwear to shake off the sleepiness and get back to work!

ought-screen

Being the contraction of "I ought to get more screen time from my parents", this slang term refers to the phenomenon where your parents always limit your screen time that you suddenly lose your "appetite" to binge-watch YouTube. Hence, it eventually "shapes" your habits of limiting your own screen time whilst paradoxically teaching children how to get more screen time from their parents.
Ever since my parents started limiting my screen time, I’ve developed this ought-screen mentality—now I barely want to binge-watch anything, even though I’m always scheming ways to convince them to let me have more!

cognitive debt

Increasingly common throughout the 21st century, "cognitive debt" refers to the phenomenon where your brain is increasingly "untrained" due to outsourcing your thinking to Google or ChatGPT.

AADC effect

The phenomenon when the box office success of one Indonesian movie, e.g. "AADC: Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?" (2002) whose title means "What's Up with Love?", is immediately followed by the emergence of many Indonesian movies with similar themes
After "AADC: Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?" became a hit, the AADC effect kicked in, and suddenly every new release was another teen romance trying to capture the same magic!

screen time rivalry

In this phenomenon, there are always countless other people with way more screen time than the amount of screen time you're able to have. It's because the country with world's highest screen time (Indonesia, 6.05 hours per day) is also the 4th most populous country in the world, housing 270 millions of inhabitants.
Every time I check my screen time stats, I feel the pressure of the screen time rivalry, especially knowing Indonesia has the highest average at over 6 hours a day!

triple Java

When you're coding in Java, whilst drinking "java" (the slang term for "coffee") and being in the Indonesian island named Java.
I pulled an all-nighter for my programming project, fully embracing the triple Java: coding in Java, sipping my coffee, and soaking up the vibes of beautiful Java Island!
