Get the Gobsmackedmug. When a woman becomes a widow NOT BECAUSE HER HUSBAND DIED but due to other circumstances. Those reasons may also include a husband (and father, if kids were involved) that leaves home abandoning his wife (and child/ren) never to return. The term "grass widow" was introduced in the 1920s/30s.
For years, Katie Moreland didn't tell her only son Meredith, that his father didn't in fact die. Lane Moreland didn't want to bear the responsibility of raising a family so young, so he packed up his stuff and left, leaving Katie a grass widow.
