Belmont

Beautiful little village area at the southern end of the town of Sutton in outer London/north Surrey. Belmont has its own small railway station, while Sutton's mainline station is only a mile north. There are several restaurants in the main village street, and the residential roads off contain character houses from the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

People who live in Belmont are lucky. I wish I lived there.

MERSTHAM

Lovely villagey town in Surrey about 20 miles from London, surrounded by beautiful countryside. Topped off by playing host to a nice little art gallery, the Rt Gallery.

Go to Merstham to breath in the fresh Surrey air and soak up the culture at the Rt Gallery.

HACKBRIDGE

An area of outer south London within the London Borough of Sutton. Sutton Council is renowned for its green credentials, as evidenced by being a partner in the energy efficient housing scheme in Hackbridge known as BedZED (=Beddington Zero Energy Development).

Hackbridge is near to a beautiful and extensive park: Beddington Park contains a Grade I listed manor house, and is very picturesque with the River Wandle (a Thames tributary) flowing through it.

Hackbridge is in travel card zone 4, and just one stop from uber cool Carshalton.

Hackbridge is set for even greater things in coming years with more beautifully designed, ecological housing now being built.

Ewell

Really nice large village just outside London in the north of Surrey. It's a mile from Epsom and two miles from Cheam, with which it shares the vast and beautiful Nonsuch Park. It is very picturesque with some buildings dating back centuries, lovely old churches and a small village centre park called Bourne Hall park which also features a library and a large and very pretty pond complete with a fountain. Ewell is also home to the excellent Ewell Castle School.

When in Ewell it's pleasant to visit Bourne Hall to get some books from the library and then have a picnic in Bourne Hall Park overlooking the pond.

Sutton

The town of Sutton in Greater London is a likeable spot to live in or visit. It's good for the arts with its huge well stocked library, complete with its own "Europa" art gallery; its large Waterstones bookshop, arranged over two storeys with a nice little coffee area upstairs; and its own cinema and theatre. Schools in the wider Sutton borough are known for being among the very best in the whole of Britain, and two of the best of these are in the centre of the town. Sutton High Street is always vibrant with its coffee houses with pavement seating, good fashion shops and tons of quality restaurants. The town has good architecture, including plenty of Victorian and Edwardian, lots of outdoor public art, leafy parks and, last but not least, a very good community spirit.

Wallington

Attractive middle class town within the London Borough of Sutton with the great distinction of being the site of three of the best Grammar schools in the entire country.

Wallington is the hotspot of Britain for secondary education.
