the default layer

(n.) The visible, superficial crust of reality where the majority of human interaction takes place. It is the grid built out of standard programming, routine transactions, clocks, and social expectations—where people operate purely from their masks because they are too afraid of the stillness required to look deeper. It runs on the false assumption that what can be physically measured or seen on the surface is all that exists, completely deaf to the baseline currents running beneath it.

He's too trapped in the default layer to see what's actually happening; he just looks at the surface metrics and misses the whole point.
