A term used to describe someone who has an exaggerated sense of self being or worth. The term was popularized in the series Hogan's Heroes where Colonel Hogen would call Colonel Klink "the old cod", with the Klink thinking that it was an American expression of flattery.

In coastal fishing towns the "big cod" is equivalent to the "one that got away" and the person called "the big cod" is therefore the teller of the most fantastic or outlandish stories.
The locals called him "the big cod" as he fashioned himself as quite the ladies man and always had an entertaining tale to tell.
