Ideals invented by Ian MacKaye. Primarily focuses on maintain a pure body and conscience by abstaining from drugs and alcohol. Promotes monogomous relationships (not mariage) and a vegetarian diet (although this is not essential). Ian MacKaye went so far as to shave his head but no one does this as a sign of their devotion anymore. Early straight-edgers could be identified by 'X's tattoed into their hands.
Straight-edge used to mean something. Now you see kids who shop at Hot Topic using Sharpies to draw 'X's on their hands.

Living a poison free life. Straight edge (Sxe or XXX), has three basic rules:
X- No drugs (nothing that alters your mood)
X- No alcohol
X- No casual sex.
Straight edge does not mean you don't have fun, it simply means you can think without depending on a substance, and you have a smaller chance of getting STDs because you fucked some random person.

Being Straight edge is keeping yourself pure and not polluting your body with Alchohol, Drugs, and other Substances. Some Straight Edge followers do not eat meat or dairy, some do not ingest caffine, or even sugar. The Mark of Straight edge is three X's (X X X) sometimes abreviated sXe, Straight Edge followers typically wear two X's on the backs of their hands at hardcore shows, or sometimes everyday, Bouncers back in the day would mark underaged concergoers so bartenders would know not to serve them alchoholic beverages, so the Straight Edge followers took that symbol and made it into their mark.
