Get the High School Seniors mug.Millville Senior High School (MSHS) is a public high school located in Millville, South Jersey. With class sizes of approximately 400 - 450 people, MSHS receives students from Commercial Township, Lawrence Township, and Maurice River Township in addition to students living in Millville.
MSHS holds the unfortunate honor of being consecutively ranked towards the bottom of New Jersey Monthly's annual list of public high schools. In 2018, MSHS was ranked 287th out of 305 high schools. Of my graduating class, the average math SAT score was a 480, the average reading SAT score was a 460, and the average writing SAT score was a 450. Only 24% of graduates went on to pursue a 4-year college. The remaining 76% either went to community college, into the military, or decided to opt for "other" career avenues.

A high school serving the Georges-German townships in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. One of the worst places in the known universe. Populated by crackheads, criminals, thugs, bad management, drug dealers, inefficient staff members, and upper management that only cares about money, this school is a 4 year prison sentence for anyone who goes there. The bathrooms are never cleaned, drug deals are talked about, and done in the open, 99% of the school is addicted to weed at the very least. The staff would rather tell parents how much they care about keeping students educated and safe, and then turn around and line their own pockets with those lies. Recently had many cutbacks, probably due to the expensive renovation of their football field that was in no need of renovation whatsoever. There are good teachers, but they are usually setback by upper management, and the bad ones don't actually teach anything useful. A meme related to this school, "Bottom 10 percent", is related to staff that would rather chide students then fix the actual problems with the place.

Get the Albert Gallatin Area Senior High School mug.Now that some of the more objective facts are out of the way, here is my personal social commentary on the school/city in general. The culture of the high school is interesting to say the least. Downtown Millville (3rd Street area) is pretty much like Detroit or Camden, and the outskirts of the city (Maurice River / Laurel Lake area) could pretty much be Alabama or the Deep South. It wouldn't be an unlikely occurrence to see a cigarette chain-smoking, Confederate flag-toting, pick-up truck driving redneck pull up next to a Glock 9 packing, drug-slinging, Meek Mill wannabe rapping gang member. While these are the two extreme ends of the spectrum, the majority of the population consists of your typical Under Armour hoodie-wearing, video-game playing, middle-class white suburban Philadelphia sports aficionados (Go Birds).
The school does boast promising sports potential - most famously, 2-time American MVP League and possible MLB GOAT contender Mike Trout. The football team is a force to be reckoned with, and it would be even better if St. Augustine Prep didn't poach half of Millville's talent every year. Same thing goes for the basketball team. Hopefully the well-run sports program will continue to execute on its promising talent pool. Notable alumni include Ed Shockley (2014, Dallas Cowboys), Buddy Kennedy (2017, Arizona Diamondbacks), and Ryquell Armstead (2015, Jacksonville Jaguars).

Get the Carpinteria Senior High School mug.I strongly disagree with the decision for high school athletes to pick their college based on if they can play a D-III or D-II sport at the college they choose to attend. I think there is too much of a focus on committing to schools based on sports, and while this isn't always pursued in vain, I think there needs to be a higher emphasis placed on attending a college that most closely aligns with possible career ambitions. The reality is that it is highly unlikely to go pro from a D-III or D-II school (even D-I for that matter), and while it is unlikely that most high-schoolers will know what they want to do with the rest of their life, it is better to pursue a college based on how strong it is in certain areas (business, engineering) and how economically feasible it is to attend (Rowan, Rutgers, CCC).
The outlook of Millville has the potential to be bright. The New Jersey Schools Development Authority (SDA) has recently commenced a $114.5 million expansion of the school. The new infrastructure will help the school accommodate around 2,000 students and will include new science labs, music rooms, cafeterias, and gyms. Expected to be completed by 2022, this gives Millville a promising glimmer of hope to become a greater New Jersey school similar to its North Jersey counterparts. This, coupled with a stronger focus and resource allocation towards AP classes and SAT test prep could drastically improve the school's trajectory towards greatness. Hopefully that day comes soon.
