From Middle English costnien, from Old English costnian, subsidiary form of Old English costian ("to tempt, try, prove, examine"), from Proto-Germanic kustōnan (“to try, taste”), from Proto-Indo-European *geus- (“to enjoy, taste”). Cognate with German kosten ("to taste").
