A phrase commonly used in the U.K. in the late 1960s, which was a
form of playing chicken by racing
two vehicles against each other into and through a street intersection. Usually one of the vehicles is unaware of the other, and is proceeding down the
road normally, towards an intersection. The second vehicle waits until both vehicles are approximately 30 feet from the intersection, at which the second vehicle engages and races to beat the unaware first vehicle to the intersection. Oftentimes the first vehicle, trying to avoid a collision, swerves and
ends up in a
ditch while the second vehicle races off.
