Third Spaces

Refers to places other than home or school/work that can be used for socializing (everything from movie theatres and public parks to libraries and cafes). Coined by Ray Oldenberg in the 1980's to describe how, even by that time, such spaces were disappearing as fixtures of many communities. In the years since the term's coining, the spaces that have survived have also become increasingly expensive, further restricting their use, especially by young people.
Sam: I'm so bored of hanging out at home! Can't we go somewhere else?
David: Sorry pal, but unless we scrape up some more money, Third Spaces are still off limits.
